Learn the skill. Understand the reason.
I’m Simeon Hardy, the coach behind BOXwithSimmy. My approach starts with a simple question: what are we trying to improve in this round?
It might be your balance when you step back, the return of your hand after a jab, or what you do after a combination. Understanding the purpose helps you pay attention to the details that make the movement work.
Build the skill before adding the pressure
First learn the movement, then add the next challenge. Practice at a pace where you can get the technique right. Add speed, movement and unpredictability as that foundation becomes dependable.
Confidence comes from being able to do the skill. Working harder matters, but so does knowing what you are working on.
Give every tool a purpose
Shadowboxing lets you examine your movement. Pad work develops timing and accuracy with a coach. On the bag, you choose your own combinations and judge your own distance. I want you to develop that independence alongside the ability to follow a drill.
Train strength that supports your boxing
Punching involves your legs, hips, trunk and arm working together. That connection shapes my approach to strength training. Rotation, stability and control help you maintain your structure and transfer force. The exercise should have a reason that connects back to the movement.
Be patient with the process
The speed bag reminds you to slow down, find the rhythm and reset when you miss. Bring that attention to every part of your training.
Understand what you are doing, why it matters and what to practice next.
